The End of Summer Fishing

The end has come once again. The end of the summer fishing season, that is. The boat is out of the river, winterized, tarped, and stored for the winter. It's kind of depressing, actually. It means that winter isn't too far off. The cold weather, the freezing winds, and the snow. I think the snow is the worst part of it.

On the other hand, winter brings the ice fishing season. Taking the shanty out on the lake, cranking up the old propane heater, drinking beer, and hanging out with friends. Sometimes my wife will cook a big pot of chili to put over the heater for us guys to chow down on at lunch time. Man, it doesn't get much better than that!

I've got to get the old shack out of storage and get the flat tire fixed. It's probably time to think about putting some new tires on it too. I've also got to remember to get my sturgeon spearing license before the end of this month so I can be ready for the season opener the second weekend in February. Hopefully we'll have enough ice by then. With this screwy weather, you never know.

Just yesterday, we had 70º. Today we're fighting to reach 50º! That's Wisconsin for ya. I remember when we used to be on the ice before Christmas. Not so anymore. The last few years have barely produced enough ice by February for sturgeon spearing!

Before we know it, it'll be Thanksgiving and then the beginning of the Christmas season. Time sure does fly the older I get. Hardly seems like there's time enough to do everything I intend to do.

Anyway, on to another season. More time for family and friends this time of year. Isn't that what it's all about anyway?

Here's a picture of my two boys with some of the fish we caught this summer on Lake Michigan.
